When something we have held in secret is made visible, relief inevitably follows. It trails what we have concealed like a thread, threatening to unravel the disguise in its entirety. It is easy to think that relief is what we have sought the whole time we were cloistered with our truth, but it is only a byproduct— the real sense of peace comes from not seeing ourselves as alone anymore.
Malerie Marder poses her subjects nude. Taking away the most discernible layer, the viewer must pick at the layers that remain. What is separating from the body, from the image? In the vulnerability of any given transitional state, there is an attempt by Marder to alleviate the isolation felt in this space. The camera becomes a witness, a reminder of the presence of another and of Marder herself.
Marder was born with the Sun in Saturn’s sign. The light in this place may find more fluent expression through others. It is as if the self is too hard to see by its own effulgence. Like a faceted diamond, a more complete image is assembled through multiple mirrors. Saturn, also connotes that which is dark, distant and alien. The anomalies of a person’s character, including aspects conventionally considered to be abhorrent or undesirable, are welcomed here. Marder’s lens has repeatedly sought these forbidden forms.
SNAFU (Situation Normal All Fucked Up), opens on a New Moon in the mercurial sign of Virgo. Virgo is a sign alert to the quickening decline of life as the light fades with the season in the northern hemisphere. The photographs in this show hold a similar awareness and find a melody in an arrangement of jagged, minor notes.
